Mortal Kombat: Federation of Martial Arts Review: The Story

There is a storyline to MK Federation of Martial Arts told outside of the videos. The FOMA page on the official MK site at the time had a few links they were told as "news reports". Examples are, Federation Wire, Earth Realm Report, and The Pit. I be going over the stuff.

If you want to see links to my other part of the review of FOMA, here's the intro, and here's about the web videos.

Here is a link to most of the storyline. The person on the site archived all the stuff about FOMA.(Dead Link)
Beware of the above link, it's a wall of text. Also to mention, it seems events are told out of order.

The storyline tells how the elder gods set up the tournament. Basically any realm is allow to participate. I'm surprised Reptile's realm is in it since his race is an endangered species. It also says that all the bad guys are alive. Stang Tsung is more powerful from his resurrection which is hard to believe seeing he got defeated by a women's charms in the web series.
In Conquest, he fought her and two other female assassins and wasn't "distracted".

I have to remind myself of movie/TV canon half the time instead of the well known game canon. Things like that Raiden and Kahn are bros. Liu hates Shang for killing his bro.(Who doesn't exist in games) Sub-Zero hates Liu for killing his bro(instead of Scorpion in games). Why is everything about bros here?

It mentions both Jade and Mileena are resurrected. That's one of the things that I have to remind myself is that Jade really did die as a villain in 2nd movie. In games, she quickly joined with Kitana and remain as a good guy.

During the entry about Mileena's resurrection that says she is a hideous clone of Kitana. Which is untrue in movie/TV canon since Mileena is a generic Outworlder with a bad teeth that was briefly given the illusion of Kitana's face as she was sent to kill Kung Lao in disguise.
If you ignore the show and go by the movie themselves. Sonya was briefly confused Mileena with Kitana and that's it.

I admit I forgot certain names from MK Conquest like Kiri. I did quick google quickly remembered it was the lizard woman disguised as a bi-sexual playboy Asian model.(No, I'm not making up that last sentience.)

The tournament is not a secret to all of Earth and everyone knows about it. Err..yeah. I have a hard time picturing the world finding out that our world is part of many realms and beings from the other realms want to invade ours by winning tournaments that has secret ninja clans, 4-armed beasts, cyborgs, gods, sorcerers, demons.

The lame filler character, Hikata is a warrior monk from Outworld who is rumored to fabricate thoughts into real objects.

Next it said that Jimmy Cage has a striking resemblance to his late bro which is incorrect since he looks more like Tom Cruise. I hate to say it but his replacement actor in the 2nd movie tried to resembles the actor from the 1st movie at least.

Then you got MK Legacy where Casper Van Dien replaced Johnny Cage's Matt Mullins where they look nothing alike.

There is some backstory told about Quan Chi's three assassins. Siann was banished to the Netherrealm(Hell basically) due to being a thief, murder, black magic. Sora was part of a rebellion group going against Kahn. Kahn invaded Mika's realm and made her his slave. Oh great, now Kahn is a rapist. Anyways, the three died and all endrf up in the Netherrealm and met with Quan Chi.

In current times, Siann and Sora escaped and joined Earthrealm's side. It mentioned that they hate Quan Chi due to many repeated forced intimidate encounters. So Quan Chi is a rapist, gee it's bad enough he made Scorpion's life hell(pun unintended), but now this. I being cheering even more so now after watching Sonya squish his balls and Scorpion got his hands on him in MKX.

It mention Jax doesn't have his metal arms which definitively showed that was missing in the web series. Also tells about Jax's old flame, Ruby who was a oneshot character from the Defenders of the Realm cartoon. Later on, it's talking about Jax finding Ruby's body. Police tried to arrest him and he bodyslams the detective and lay the smackdown on another officer....Ok, this is kinda hilarious. The mere idea he grabs a detective and bodyslams him is hard to imagine. However this makes Jax a complete idiot. Now he's charged for resisting arrest and assaulting police.

Sonya hears the news in the showers and rush out without realizing she's naked. She got be embarrassed right after.

During the interrogation at police headquarters, Jax breaks out and lays the smackdown on the cops and is on the run. He meets up with Sonya and they go to hiding.

Later on, Raiden and the gang later discovered Jax and Sonya covered in blood and robot arms. They say Sonya was abducted by ninjas but Jax came in to save her and they fought off the ninjas.(Could be Lin Kuei but doesn't say.)

It recaps what's seen in the web series of Jax's trial, punishment, him braking out of the James Bond villain death trap, and fake Smoke(As I call him) being revealed as the true killer and dies.

People ponder who was fake Smoke. It even mentions he resembles Smoke before he became a cyborg. There were questions like did Smoke somehow return to human form, even if he did had surgery to get rid of all his implants, there bad alot scarring on his tissue, which wasn't seen on Fake Smoke. However, later paragraphs have Robo-Smoke so it's not him. Another theory was it the obscured rainbow colored ninja, Chameleon, or was it known Black Dragon operative, Jimmy Cage.

If it was Chameleon, I laugh that his 1st ever appearance in live-action that this lesser known kharacter appears is in a obscured forgotten web series.

If it's Jimmy Cage, good riddance you lame knockoff. However he appears in later paragraphs and he wants to challenge Goro.(Maybe to fight his bro's rival despite being a bad guy)

It recaps the other stuff seen at the end of the videos of the web series. Stuff like the elder gods figuring out who should be Raiden's replacement as an elder god and then Raiden plans a war against the elder gods if Shao Kahn becomes his replacement. The tournament is put on hold till the replacement is settled.

It tells how Scorpion and Siann are victims of the tournament and sent to the Netherrealm. Well that's true in the web series. They are the only deaths in the entire thing with Scorpion falling into a green screen while Siann was turned into a blown up head covered in plastic with red Windows Paint leaking out of it.

Goro comes to Reptile's realm, attacks everything and abducts Kiri. Now Reptile want to be in the tournament just to fight Goro. However that doesn't happen in the web series videos. Reptile can be simply a green ninja but Goro is a 4-armed giant. As cheap the series is, I doubt we see Goro, unless they cheaply use stock footage from the 1st movie.

One thing happened is that Cyrax, Smoke, and Ermac joined forces.
Just to point out, the red cyborg Sector isn't in this web series at all.

The 2nd MK movie needless try to shove as many kharacters they can and they still can't get everyone. Sector was one of the select few that wasn't there and for some reason, the web series wanted to follow the same thing. It's weird that reading all this wall of text and Sector doesn't exist.

Not liking that Kahn is a possible candidate of being an elder god, Raiden sends Liu Kang, Jax, and Tanya on a covert mission to Outworld to kidnap Shao Kahn.
Yes you heard right, Tanya the backstabber.

This was back when MK4 was the newest game and it was at the time, it was Tanya's only appearance. I'm guessing the writers of web series didn't bother to look up her kharacter's ending where it's revealed that she betrayed the good guys. As far I looked throughout the story of the web series, Tanya never go through a betrayal story arc, she simply stays on the good side.

Next thing Raiden does is he sends Nightwolf, Kitana, and Sonya to recruit thousands and thousands of warriors from dojos all over Earth. Throughout the story, Sonya whooped a bunch of dojos' best fighters for recruiting fighters.

Shao Kahn sends out his shadow priests. If any of the good guys are seen in Outworld, kill them. Gee, it be the ending of MK Conquest all over again. Shao Kahn hopes he gets elected and becomes an elder god. If it does happen, He make Sonya fight Jax. Liu against Kitana. Jimmy fighting Nightwolf, and Raiden vs Omegis.

A rock statue suddenly shattered near the steps of the Federation arena. The remains look like Raiden and people wonder if he was turned into a statue and got destroyed. I doubt he's dead.

The elder gods believe it was someone with the powers of black magic and their four culprits are, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, Ermac, and Omegis. Well it turns out the statue was planted by Shao Kahn's shadow priests to cause havoc while Raiden is alive and well, hidden in the Himalayas at Fujin's temple.

Kitana recruits Sub-Zero to their side. They reference his victories on the web series and despite being on the same side, some of good guys are bitter towards him. Raiden offers protection for him from the Lin Kuei since he abandon his clan. The clan's grandmaster wanted all the ninjas the lose their humanity and convert to cyborgs.

One part of the story has three masked people confront stormed Shao Kahn's castle. They beat up Ermac and went to the evil emperor. He got captured and vanished with them. It never does say who are the invaders but I'm guessing this is Raiden's covert team.

Meanwhile Jax came back to Earthrealm from the covert mission while Liu and Tanya are still missing.

Shang Tsung and Queen Vorpax take's the missing Kahn's throne. Ermac was not happy about this.

After seeing so many repeated entries of "Liu and Tanya are still missing in Outworld". We finally got an answer. Liu is totally cheating on Kitana with Tanya.

Err..ok. The 1st movie teased of Liu and Kitana being together and this carried on to all the games that came after. I have a hard time imagining Liu Kang as a sneaky two-timer.
Just remember when you see these scenes, remember that he cheats on her.

I refused to take this as canon for either the games or the tv/movies. Their relationship destroyed in some awful forgotten web show.

Earlier I wrote about Kitana recruiting Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero and Kitana are getting along well. He's happy someone's there not to kill him and he treats the princess with respect. Basically they are teasing the idea of the two blue ninjas being together. To have a feast with her, he kills a bear. Isn't he a romantic.

Then I remember that the web-series version of the ice ninja is this rude talkative guy.
"Come on, you can't beat me", "You alive in there", "Come on, is that all you got", "What's a matter, need some help getting up","You can't take me".

Suddenly, Lin Kuei ninjas attack the two blue ninjas and they hold them off.

Liu goes to Fujin's temple in Earthrealm with a wounded Tanya in his arms. The medics try to nurse her. No word on who the attacker is.

Outside the medic room, Quan Chi disguised a monk attacked Raiden. Liu comes to help the thunder god but Mika attack Liu with mallet.(What is she? Harley Quinn? Well she is the blond of the trio.)

Siann and Sora comes in to help the good guys and the two evil ones escape. Raiden thanks them for going traitor on the baddies and sends them to Fujin's temple to be cleanse. Some wondered if this is a trap since Siann and Sora are suddenly back from the dead and it was planned that they saved the good guys at the right time.

Liu is now angry that Kitana is still missing. Truth is, the attack from the Lin Kuei spook the two blue ninjas and they are laying a low profile. Liu goes out on his own and finds the two in cave. Thinking they are together, he attacks in jealously fury. (Seriously Liu, after what you were doing in Outworld?)

Liu shortly realized that he's out of line. Raiden doesn't like this and wants his champion to have a cool head. Liu and Kitana agreed to focus on training other fighters than their relationship. So they are no longer together. A forgotten web show has sunk this ship.

There is a storyline of Nightwolf trying to convert Jimmy to good guys but Jimmy says no and sends the Black Dragon on Nightwolf. The shaman gets hospitalize from this. This causes Jax and Sonya to wanting revenge.

With Liu "single". Siann tries to make the moves on Liu and may of done sexual stuff. Good gosh, who knew the hero of the series was such a horn dog. However it may be fake news from Outworld since according to Raiden, they are on different continents supposedly at the time.

Way later on, Liu is training warriors at Fujin's temple and totally ok that Siann is training warriors. Omegis isn't happy someone who used to be evil is training and she and Siann duke it out but Liu and Raiden brake it up.

Ok, when was Omegis ever wanting to work fully for team Earthrealm? Her only appearance was on MK Conquest and she seems more neutral than a full on hero. She more concerned on trying to get Kung Lao or Siro to sleep with her than to help them. Heck, she purposely poisoned her master and buried his immortal body. Did the writers of the web series didn't bother to look at her character while watching the series and...
and...nevermind. They were busy drooling on her then paying attention on her role and motivations are.

Sonya and Jax want to avenge the beaten Nightwolf and go to Black Dragon's strip club hideout. The lame Kano knockoff known as Jarek was present at the area and a major battle happen. I swear, the Black Dragon is full of lame knockoffs, from Johnny's lame bro, to Kano's knockoff, to the Ken Masters knockoff, Kobra.

Why would a guy with no robotic eyes have eye lasers?

As many Scorpion/Sub-Zero recolors and kharacters with the same movesets as Ryu/Ken, nearly every single one of them is far more original and interesting than this lame kharacter.

Sonya and Jax defeated all criminals and they leave with Jimmy as their hostage. They torture him and interrogated him on info on Black Dragon. He had no food, water, or sleep in 60 hours. He tells info and Sonya is surprised Kano is alive. Sonya wants Kano's head and resigns from tournament.

Ermac believes there is a traitor who set up Kahn's disappearance. He believe Rain be one since he was Kitana's old buddy and not seen in a while. Ermac doesn't trust Jade and Mileena since they are extremely quiet in their duties. Shang agrees to help and travel to the Netherrealm to find Rain's soul. I guess Rain died from his fight with Quan Chi in the web series.

I look back at the end of the video and Rain's body wasn't seen at the last 2 seconds after when the fireball hit him. It's a two brief second scene, you don't see his body disintegrate or anything. How are the viewers going to assume he died? It look like he just get hit by a simply energy projectile.

Anyways, Shang has Reptile, Kiri, Cyrax, and Smoke on his team. They go into the Netherrealm but Shang now plans to Ermac, instead of resurrecting Rain, it's Scorpion.

This leads to a enemy civil war. Goro and Motaro fight each other and Goro kills him by ripping off his arms, legs, and tail. I'm glad it's on this story part of this series and not the actual videos because I hate to see the cheap looking fatality.

Team Shang storm the throne room to fight the loyalists. Ermac, Noob, and Filler Towelhead(Hikata) teleport away.

Team Shang were on a hunt for them them and they were found in cave. The sorcerer and Ermac make deal, if Shang wins a one on one fight, they join them. They battled and Shang Tsung somehow goes all Super Sayian with a purple aura around his body and he totally pwned Ermac. The remainder of the story never says where the source of Shang's new power is comes from.

Jade and Mileena looking for Kahn to stop the civil war among the villains. Shang wants to stop them and reprograms the two cyborgs to hunt them down. I have a hard time imagining that a centuries old magic user can work on robots. Then again, both MK3 and the 2nd movie had Kahn's forces reprogram them.

Jade and Mileena finally found Kahn, the emperor is imprisoned at Fujin's temple. His cage is protected by spells from Fujin, Omegis, and Nightwolf. Before they could get to them, the two reprogrammed cyborgs found them. Cyrax launch two bombs and causes the mountain to cave in the two female assassins.

Some time after resigning from the tournament, Sonya contacted Special Forces, saying she found Kano. Days passed since Sonya's last transmission and she is now missing. A Special Forces' unit took Jimmy as insurance and he led them to Hong Kong. He has a collar with a vial that will set off if he flees or tries to break it. Think Suicide Squad.

Raiden is having the Earth Realm army is setting up invasion of Outworld when their world is going through a civil war. It's odd to see Raiden the type of guy who is making covert missions, abducting Kahn like that, and creating an invasion force. You think is this mean enforcer god, Dark Raiden but he didn't appear till four years later in MK Deception.

Liu Kang can now use a vanishing move and causes guerrilla warfare on and off by attacking the castle. I swear, if they ever make a new MK game, I want to see Liu Kang going invisible or Super Sayian Shang Tsung.

Shang sends Scorpion to Fujin's temple and sends some shadow priests as back up. I'm surprised they are following Shang.
I'm mean, they kill every single major kharacter, including Shang Tsung in the last episode of the TV show. Makes more sense they follow Kahn rather switch sides.

Unhappy hearing that Jade and Mileena are alive from the cave in, Shang reprograms they cyborgs to fight each other. They fight and Cyrax force himself to self-destruct to take them both. Ok, that was a waste to their kharacters.

Scorpion sneaks inside the mountains near Fujin's temple and finds Kahn. They mention his white eyes.
What white eyes?

He met Sub-Zero and they fight. The Lin Kuei ninjas come in and attack their traitor and enemy clan member. The two famous ninjas join forces and kill all their enemies. The two ninjas are back at it.

I would love to see their epic match but we should be thankful it wasn't in the videos because the suckage of them would ruin it.

Their battle got them near the cage and it activated Kahn's prison defenses and they were blown away by powerful winds.

Shang tries to get Quan Chi to join by offering a soul of a champion. The necromancer agrees to help and he gets shadow priests to help back him up.

Quan Chi is now outside of Fujin's temple with Rain and Motaro who are recently resurrected. They sneak inside and found the cage. Quan Chi blasts a fireball destroys the Fujin's whirlwinds. Nightwolf's shaman statues come to life and attack but they are destroyed by Motaro. Rain use his water powers to get rid of Omegis' poisons. Quan Chi's shadow priest try to free Kahn but all are stop by a cold blast from Sub-Zero. They mention of setting a score of a medallion despite not being in movie canon.
The 1st movie only said that Scorpion and Sub-Zero are enemies but slaves under Shang Tsung's power. That's the entire backstory. Now we somehow assume the events of the Sub-Zero spinoff game is canon to the movies.

Then there's TV show Conquest that gives the two different backstories from the games kinda, or their ancestors. It doesn't say but it's takes place 500 years in the past.

Back to the story, the shadow priests brake free from the ice and try to use their powers to mind control Sub-Zero to their bidding. At the cage, Quan Chi ready to great Kahn, not there to free him but there to steal his soul. This upsets Shang since he's want to put the hurt on Kahn. However the thing is that Kahn wasn't really powerless. He allowed himself to be captured and use this ruse to test his people to see who are all the ones who would go against him.

At this point, the story pretty much over and they are wrapping up loose threads.

More stuff was said like Quan Chi and Rain were in cohorts the entire time since MK Conquest and Rain's "death" in web series was set up.

Special Forces have now found the Black Dragon hideout to save Sonya. They now all of a sudden have stealth camo tech. Anyways, the two groups duke it out and gunfire happen and Jimmy for once acts heroic and jumps the bullet for Sonya. The Black Dragon group are defeated but Kano wasn't found at the scene.

Both Sonya and Jimmy are at the hospital. When Jimmy was feeling better, he sneak out his room and went to Sonya's room and talk to her in her sleep and cried.

There is somewhat of a story arc for Jimmy that he cares for Sonya because she is his late brother's implied love interest. However it's barely developed and briefly told in these wall of texts.

The elder gods have return to resume the tournament. The reason they are away is because they are on a far away realm that's being invaded from a powerful all female army. (Vorpax's army? Doesn't say) Also there is another tournament there on that realm.

Kahn is back on throne and it doesn't say anything about his plan on the traitors.

The election of who should be the new elder god is over and the winner is Fujin. So that's good for the good guys then.

The civil war is over and Earthrealm's planned invasion has stopped since the elder gods are back running business as well as Kahn not becoming an elder god.

Raiden has returned to be protector of Earthrealm. The tournament will be back running.

And that's the end of the entire storyline of the web series. It wasn't good honesty. You can tell it was written like a collect of news reports. Certain stuff was unexplained clearly like one sentence say Kahn's castle was struck by Lightning. Was it Raiden or Rain who did that, it doesn't say? Then you get barely developed characters like Jimmy Cage who would jump in front of a bullet just because we barely seen a sentience or two of him caring for Sonya. There's also random events happening that goes nowhere like Shang and Quan Chi making deals long before Kahn's disappearance or Ermac joining forces with the two cyborgs.
