Journey to the Underworld: Facts and Deleted Material

This story was my semester test that I had to make for Mythology class at the very end of the school year. Other students had stories like one guy went to the land of the redheads, one is Cupid and Aphrodite created dating sites, one is finding Puff, the magic dragon. One is the goddess of concrete's love was taken for her and she search the entire Earth to look for him, explaining why roads are everywhere on this planet.

Scylla wasn't in the original, I felt I wanted to add another monster, so I threw him in. Fans of the God of War games should remember him from the PSP games or it's HD remakes.

Speaking of God of War, I wrote this story way before the games came out. So no, I didn't copied from the game series. I'll admit I was inspired a little by Clash of the Titans(original), Disney's Hercules, and the original Greek myth stories. I can't with the movie Troy that came out that year, since that's a realistic take on the 10-year war.

Titans were part of Hades' army but they were simply generic. Just like the Titans in the Disney's Hercules movie. The Titans do have name you know. I decided to remove them.

Dialogue was nearly nonexistent. Like for example: The gods told Chris about Hades and they gave him weapons.

The references to the Dodgeball stories and Heroes vs. Baddies weren't in the original. The story was simply made for my semester test. After a month or two after school ended, I simply made the story a part of the same universe as the others.

Artemis was called Diana. I forgot her Greek name at the time and went with her Roman name. I went back to her Greek name.

Zeus never had a lightning sword but I didn't care, because swords are cool. God of War did something similar and created a sword that was said to be used in the Titanomachy. Swords did exist back in the day but I don't remember any of the Olympians having a sword as their personal weapon.

The battle scenes were brief. For Example: Chris slay Cerberus, chop off Medusa's head, shove the sword into the Minotaur's mouth, shoot Cyclops in the eye....

Charon the ferryman wasn't in the original. It just simply said Chris crosses the river of Styx on a boat.

I was thinking of adding the Nemean Loin but how to kill him is too complicated to write. His fur is impenetrable and the story of Hercules said he killed him by choking him. To remove the fur and wear over his head as armor, Hercules had to use the one thing that can cut the loin's fur, it's claws.

No, the Princess of Cabot wasn't based on anyone. I very rarely based people in my stories from real life. It's just when I said the bald black man in the 1st Dodgeball story is based on Morpheus and not one of the select few black students Cabot High we had at the time. Besides, in a year or two, are you still dating, seeing, crushing, etc on the same boy/girl from that time. I knew my stories would be told for a while and it be dumb to write the Princess on anyone.

Chaos was the guy who existed before everyone else in Greek Mythology. He was a shapeless being of some sort. Sounds like some unspeakable horror. Some versions of the myth simply say he's the air itself.

The Titans were in the middle of the fight between Chris and Hades.

The end of the fight said the Olympians came to the underworld and seal the weaken Hades to Tartarus, the Greek version of Hell. I change it to where the sword has special magic that teleports gods into Tartarus.

The plot twist of Zeus being the real main villain wasn't in the original, Hades was. Alot modern versions of the Greek myths try to make Hades as the main villain because people nowdays think of ruler of the Underworld, they think Satan. The Underworld wasn't really a bad place like Hell. Hades wasn't a bad guy really aside from abducting Persephone to be his wife. I admit I'm guilty of making Hades evil in the story, so I rewrote the ending a little with Zeus being the main bad guy. I won't say the god of the underworld was a good guy since he was going to kill the Princess.

In original myth of Perseus, after he saved Andromeda from a sea dragon, he claimed her as his woman. I thought claiming the Princess as Chris' girlfriend be sillier.

With the plot twist added, I added Athena saying sorry to Chris about Zeus.

Journey to the Underworld

Once upon a time, the evil god Hades has resurrected Medusa, the Kraken, Scylla, the Minotaur, the Chimera, the Cyclops, and the Hydra. The Olympians have learned of this, so they sent the messenger god, Hermes. He was sent to a man who is one of the many descendants of Zeus named Chris.

Hermes flew to Chris’ house and knock on the door. The door opened and Chris saw this strange man with wings his sandals. He said to Chris, “The Olympian gods have summon you, there is an abandon house five miles north of here. They will contact you there.”

When Chris entered the abandoned house and into the living room, holograms of the gods’ faces appear all around him. The big guy in the center with a long beard said, “Christopher of Arkansas, we have watched your battles with the Evil Elf King! We have also seen you defeating the Giant Winged Demon, We believe he may have been one of the Titans that escaped our wraith at the very end of the Titanomachy. Seeing your victory on these creatures, we see that you are worthy to face the god of the underworld, Hades.” I asked the man who I assume is Zeus. “What has he done, I thought he was with you guys?” Zeus than said in a angry tone, “That man is planning to raise an army against us and after he is done with the Olympians, he will conquer the world. You must stop him! To stop him, you must plunge my sword into his heart” After that, all the holograms vanished.

A bright light shine from the attic. The appointed hero went upstairs and saw a hologram of Athena standing next to a treasure chest. She said to him, “Here are some equipment to defeat your foes. We have send the winged-horse, Pegasus to your location. He will take to the entrance to the underworld.” Her hologram vanished.

Chris open the chest in front of him and inside was the Shield of Ares, the Bow and Arrows of Artemis, and Zeus’ Lightning Sword. The newly appointed warrior heard a horse at the front door. He head outside and saw Pegasus waiting for him. He hopped on and the winged-horse took flight.

Pegasus landed near the cave that leads to the underworld. Chris jumps off the horse and enters the cave. Once inside, he saw the giant three headed dog, Cerberus came charging towards him. The heads made a big chomp on the boy but luckily he rolled out of the way. The appointed hero pulled out his bow and arrows and fired into the left head’s eyes. With the beast howling in pain, Chris grabbed the Lightning Sword and jumped on the canine’s back. He jab the sword into his back and ran towards the three heads while dragging the sword through the beast’s back. The chosen warrior jumped on the middle head and slashed the blade his weapon on the left and right heads, hitting them between their eyes. After attacking them, he stabbed downwards into the middle head skull, finally slaying the giant canine.

He walks deeper into the underworld when he saw a strange looking river. At it’s shore was a hooded ferryman with a boat. He said in a strange scary voice, “Welcome to the river of Styx, I am Charon. Now speak boy!” Chris replied to him, “I am sent by the Olympians to see Hades.” Charon lifted his head and the appointed hero saw his face was a skull with red orbs in it’s eye sockets. The ferryman said, “Hades has requested that anyone sent by the gods are not allowed.” He reached into his robes and pulled out a large scythe. He swung the weapon towards Chris. The chosen warrior quickly pulled up Ares’ shield and block the scythe. With the weapon partly imbedded in the shield, Chris rammed the shield into the ferryman’s skull. With his enemy fazed, Chris yanked the scythe from his bony hands. He then took a mighty swing into Charon’s ribcage. Chris kicked the ferryman into the river of Styx while removing the scythe from it’s body. He got on the boat and use it to travel.

After crossing the river of Styx, Chris continue for his search of Hades. Soon, he heard the sound of snakes coming from behind. He pulled up his shield and look at the mirror from the shield’s backside. In the mirror’s reflection, he saw the ugly Medusa slowly crawling towards him. Not wanted to turn to stone, Chris closes his eyes and swing his sword. He opened his eyes and saw Medusa’s decapitated body fell to the ground.

After her death, He heard loud footsteps coming from his right. It was Minotaur, ready to crush Chris in two with his ax. The warrior rolled forward to avoid the attack. Surviving his ax, Chris uses the scythe he got from the ferryman and chopped off the Minotaur’s left leg. With the monster in pain, Chris ran to the beast and force his mouth opened. He than shove the Lightning Sword into his mouth, killing the Minotaur.

Once his body hit the ground, the chosen warrior heard more monsters approaching. It was the Cyclops, the Chimera, the Kraken, and the Scylla. Chris picked up Medusa’s head off the ground and uses it to turn the Kraken and the Scylla into stone. The Chimera came to the warrior and fired it’s flaming breath on Chris. The warrior uses the shield of Ares to block the creature’s flames. Once the creature stop it’s attack, Chris uses Artemis’ bow and fired a dozen arrows to kill the monster. Just then, the giant Cyclops grab the human in it’s hand and brought to it’s face. It said in a monstrous voice, “I will eat you!” With an arrow in his hand, Chris threw it the giant’s one eye. The monster scream in pain and loosen his grip on the human. The warrior got out of the Cyclops’ hand grip and ran up it’s arm. He jump up and slash across the giant’s neck, slaying him.

With them taken care of, another monster appeared…It was the Hydra. It lash it many heads towards Chris. He try cut off any of the monster’s heads that try to come near him but two heads quickly grew from the ones that got cut off. The appointed hero uses the bow to fire at the beast’s center head but the other heads block them like it didn’t want the center one to get hurt. Looking around to find something to kill it, he saw a giant stalactite above the monster. Chris fired a dozen arrows into it and the stalactite fell down and stabbed the Hydra’s center head. The Hydra is dead.

The hero traveled deeper into the underworld and than he finally found Hades’ chamber. He walked inside and saw the god of the underworld getting ready to perform a sacrifice. The chosen warrior saw the sacrifice was the Princess of Cabot. She was chained up on a table while the dark god shouted with a knife in his hand, “Oh Chaos, accept this sacrifice so you will awaken you!” Not wanting innocent blood spilled. Chris jumps in and kicked the knife out of his hand.

Hades pulled out his pitchfork and thrust his weapon to the hero but he block it with the sword. They engage in a weapon clash for a few minutes. During the fight, Chris mange to cut off Hades’ arm that was holding the weapon. The angry Hades pointed his stump toward the where his arm landed. It looked like it was heading back to Hades to reattach itself. Quickly, Chris rush towards Hades and stabbed the sword into Hades’ heart. Just then, a bright light shine from where the sword stabbed and engulf the entire body of the dark god. The dark god vanish as the sword fell to the ground.

Chris picked up the blade and said, “What happen to him?” Suddenly, he heard a voice from the entrance to the Hades chamber, “He was transported to the terrible place known as Tartarus. He will be imprisoned there.” The hero saw Zeus standing there and Chris smiled that Hades was stopped. Zeus said, “I asked Hephaestus forge the blade for me and put special magic in it. The magic in the sword will react when the sword will stab into the heart of someone and it will transport the person to Tartarus. I sent you to take care of Hades because he will sense my presence soon I enter the underworld. Now he is gone, I will complete the sacrifice myself.” The hero asked, “Wait, why are you doing this?” Zeus said back in a harsh tone, “Because humanity stop worshipping us. I will summon Chaos myself to destroy the universe and it will be remade in my image. Some of the other Olympians are against this. They thought to leave the universe as it is, including Hades. My brother planned to awaken Chaos himself, and then seal it up so he can rob me of my plans. He took some of the beasts from the ancient times to guard his chamber while he will summon Chaos.”

Hearing of his Zeus’ plans, Chris said to him, “No, I will not let you do that!” This causes the god to unleash his fury on him by firing lightning from his hand. Chris close his eyes and held up the sword for protection from the blast. All of sudden, he didn’t feel it. He looked at his sword and saw it absorbed Zeus’ lightning. The furious god went straight for the human and threw a fist into Chris. The warrior dodge his attack and move side by side to avoid his blows. With the sword in his hand, Chris plunge it into Zeus’ heart. The god looked down at the sword and said as light was engulfing his body, “Noooo!” Zeus was gone.

Chris went to the Princess of Cabot and freed her from his chains. Just then, Chris got shot in the back….by Cupid. He took the Princess’ hand and claimed her as he girlfriend. She pointed out a shortcut that leaves the underworld that’s near the stone body of Atlas.

They walk towards the area when suddenly, a hologram of Athena appear before them. She said, “Thank you for stopping the awakening of Chaos. I’m sorry for the trouble that Zeus has cause. We wish you luck.” The goddess of wisdom vanished. Chris and the Princess head back to Earth.
