In Japan of 1989, there was a video called Amada Anime Series: Super Mario Bros. It's a collection of fairy tales retold with Mario characters. The 1st one is about the Japanese story of Momotaro.
Here's a three minute explaining the fairy tale. You don't have to watch it but it's there to tell you what Mario is recreating.

It seems in this version, Bowser is stealing treasure from various planets.
It's funny this obscured anime predicted Super Mario Galaxy nearly a decade and half later.
The next scene shows Princess Peach with her two grandparents.
Now how in the world can a human have two turtles as grandparnets?
Bowser and the Kooplings come down in limited animation.
She gets adducted. Don't worry, this is a normal Thursdays for her since she gets kidnapped all the time.
Then we saw the same scene of the Koopalings moving slowly in their vehicles but going up.
Sometime later after losing their granddaughter. A magical peach from space crashes nearby the elderly couple.
And out came Hercules Superman Goku Mario.
Isn't weird that Mario was born out of the peach instead well...Princess Peach.
Might of well rename this story as, A tale of Two Peaches. Anyways, the elderly couple raised the boy and quickly grew up in days.

I bet shippers are going crazy about this.
Mario hears about his step sister and the turtles tell what happen by flashbacking to what exactly you four minutes ago. I mean gosh, do the makers of this video think their viewers have short term memory loss?
Anyways, Mario wants to go out to save the Princess. The grandparents gave him a tool to assist him his journey.

A gun
I have a hard time imaging Mario with a gun. Nintendo is known for being family friendly.
On his way, three different people joined with him on his quest. A Para-Beetle, a Boomerang Bro, and a Spike. They hate Bowser(or his alternate Japanese name, King Koopa) due to him robbing all the riches all the planets.

Thank goodness that Spike only has one small scene because he talks too fast and already annoying.
I know violated means other things but it kinda silly to see such a word in a Mario related thing.
I know this is very early days before the roster grew very big but, where is Luigi or Toad? Instead we get random enemies as Mario's allies.
Well anyways, they get on a flying airship to go to Bowser's planet.
Instead of fire and brimstone that you usually see at the end of nearly all Mario games, you get this bright shiny city. It seems the final world being a casino from 3D World was predicted by this video.
They clashed in very limited animation. Some of them are repeating the same moves. Oh and despite having a gun, Mario doesn't use it at all.
He only uses it to threaten the villain.
Buta Peach, we-a siblings you know.
They rescued the Princess and return the treasure to their respected planets.
The story was quick and straightforward. The animation wasn't great. I wasn't expecting anything great but man it's terrible in some shots. It did come with some laughs like the idea of Mario with a gun.
