What makes a Final Fantasy Hero: Part 3.2: "Deaths"

Here's 3.2 of where I make fun of certain cliches that happens to the main characters of Final Fantasy. I be discussing characters who "died" in the game's ending or final battle. Be warned, there will be spoilers. If there is a certain FF game you don't want to be spoiled, skip the entry.

Final Fantasy 7 has this ex-SOLDIER turn merc named Cloud.
He was hired by an rebel group to take down an evil corporation. Later on, he went on the hunt for the killer that burn down his hometown named Sephiroth.

So how he died?

1. After defeating the main villain, a hand reaches out to our hero as a familiar music play. It was Aeris, the girl who died at the end of disk 1 aka one of the gaming world's most well known spoiler. Cloud reaches out to her, ready to join her in the afterlife.(Sorry Tifa fans)

2. Or you could say that humanity was wiped out when Holy and the Lifestream destroyed Meteor.

3. If you want to go by the sequel movie, Advent Children, well one of Sephiroth's remnants shot Cloud.

Did he survived?
1. He didn't join Aeris, he woke up in the real world, seeing Tifa reaching for him.(Sorry Aeris fans)

2. As for humanity getting wiped out, FF7 ended with an ambiguous ending. It was hinted midway in the game that Holy can wiped whatever it chooses, maybe even humans. The power of Holy was used to destroy Meteor before it can crash into planet. However, with the later releases of sequels and spinoffs, humanity is alive and well.

3. In the sequel movie, some time after he got shot, he was brought to a church and he recovered, seeing all his friends and several orphans waiting for him.

One spinoff off FF7 was called Dirge of Cerberus. It was a 3rd person shooter game starring Vincent. A mysterious quiet halloween-theme character.

So how he died? He rammed himself into Omega Weapon in his Chaos form, nowhere to be seen. Even the tone of Yuffie's voice suggest that Vincent may be gone.
This pic is totally ripping off the Bahamut vs Alexander battle from FF9

Did he survived? At the end of the credits, turns out he's ok and hanging out with the frozen body of Sephiroth's babymama.

Another spinoff is a prequel game called Crisis Core, starring Zack.
Zack is a man in SOLDIER who became best buds with Cloud. He got capture and experimented on but he escaped with Cloud.

So how he died? He was shot by 3 Shinra gua...Forget that, I taking the retcon from the prequel game. He was a few miles getting back to the city where his girl is and take Cloud to safety, he turned around and saw he was surrounded by hundreds of Shinra guards. Zack took on the entire army. He mowed them down to 3 guards, but he was too weak in the end and got shot. He gave Cloud his sword before he passed away.
RIP

Did he survived? Considering he's a posthumous character in the original game. I seriously doubt he's coming back.

Final Fantasy 8 has the gunblade merc, Squall.
He is a merc who is trained to fight evil sorceresses.

So how he died? He was lost in time compression. Lost in the forgotten reaches of times, losing the memories of all his love ones.

Did he survive? Rinoa found his body and her newfound magic powers revived Squall and got rid of the time compression. The former lonewolf was with reunited with his friends.

There's a popular fan theory that Squall really died at end of disk 1 when he got stab by ice spears (he healed up). The theory says the remainder of the game is in Squall's head.

Final Fantasy 9 has the theater actor/skirt chaser, Zidane.
He was hired by a princess to "kidnap" her because her mother is planning to wage war against the whole world since she met an evil arms dealer.

So how he died? While staying at his dying brother's side, a dozen tree vines came to impaled Zidane.

Did he survived? Some time has passed, the entire city was watching a theater. A robed man in the play unmasked, revealing himself to be Zidane. His princess was happy he was back.

I didn't know about this till years later, but from what I hear, the letter that was being read in the ending was from Vivi. It seems he hit the end of his lifespan. His race was simply engineered to be short-lived weapons.
RIP

Final Fantasy 10 has the star blitzball ace called Tidus.
Tidus was the star of a sports game till he woke up in a world where his city was destroyed a 1000 years ago and the world is terrorized by a Godzilla-like monster.

Did he die? If you don't remember what I said about Tidus on Bizarre Origins on part 1 of this FF Hero series, well he's a figment of the imagination of creatures trapped in stone.

With the Godzilla-like monster destroyed and the planet free. The creatures in stone no longer are forced to dream a city that was destroy a 1000 years ago. That includes Tidus himself. As he was fading, he said goodbye to his friends while Yuna confess her feelings.

Did he survive? Nope, he's dead by the game's end...or not. There was a post-credits scene of him waking up in water but he could be in the FF10 version of Heaven for all we known.

However there was a sequel to FF10. At the very end of the game, he was brought back. The creatures in stone are free to dream whatever they want to dream. Yuna did help free them from the villain of the sequel game, and as a thank you, they dreamed up Tidus again. Turns out him waking up in the water in the post-credits of the original game was him coming back and reuniting with Yuna.

The sequel, Final Fantasy 10-2 has summoner/treasure hunter, Yuna.
Yes, her going from a priestess getup to Lara Croft in the sequel is kinda jarring to some fans.

She was the secondary main character of that game in FF10, whose on a journey to find magical creatures to summon to defeat the Godzilla-like monster. In FF10-2, she became a sphere hunter(basically a treasure hunter)

So how she die? Err..She went into the afterlife. It's the same as Firion or the FF7 gang. Yuna travel deep inside the planet to confront the villain. It's like Greek underworld where you travel down in deep caves. No, she didn't die.

Final Fantasy 12 has the street orphan, Vaan
Vaan is a orphan who lost his older bro two years ago and hates the empire. He dreams of being a sky pirate.

So how he die? He didn't.

So let me get this straight, he doesn't have a bizarre origin, doesn't have womanizing skills, and he doesn't "die" in the ending. How is this guy the main character? Why does he get the FF12 spotlight? Why did Cosmos and Chaos summon him to fight their war in Dissidia?

Well anyways, some people say main character of FF12 is one of these two people.

1st we have the sky pirate, Balthier
Balither is a sky pirate that like to hunt for treasure and take jobs for money. He likes calling himself "The Leading Man". He's basically a Han Solo/James Bond type character. He was hired by Ashe to help her on her quest to stop the empire and restore her country.

So how he dies? When the sky fortress was on a collision course of the city, Balither stay behind and work the engines to divert the sky fortress. The city was saved but it was believed that he died in the crash

Did he survive? A year later, Vaan who now flies Balither's personal airship was stolen while Ashe got a envelope with her ring inside that Balither burrowed earlier in the game.

I actually laugh when I saw Balither "died" in the game's ending, following the tradition of the other FF heroes. This shows he should of been the leading man.

The other main character of FF12 is the fallen princess, Ashe.
Ashe was the princess of a kingdom before the empire came. She lost her husband, her father, and her country. She's taking part of a rebellion and on a journey to find a magical stone that can defeat the empire.

Did she die? No, she made it safely. Unless you believed in Ondore's lies that she was dead since the start of the game.

Final Fantasy 13 was said that it didn't have an actual main character. It was like FF6. 1st, I will talk about the spotlight character. Member of the Guardian Corps, Protector of the Goddess Etro, and The Savior at the End of World. She is Lightning.
She has a younger sister that was branded with an tattoo from the enemy side of a war 500 years ago. She tried to save her but she and her allies got branded and were hunted by the government. She soon went on a quest to save the world and her sister.

In the sequel, she was summon away to protect a goddess. The ending of that game ended with the goddess dying and time itself in the physical world went haywire.

The 3rd game has her as the actual main character who is tasked by another god to save as many souls as she could before the world ends and anything gets transfer to a new world.

Yeah, there alot to write about in her 3 different games.

Did she die?

1. In the 1st game she and her friends turned into crystal zombies in front of the main villain.

2. According the opening of the 2nd game, she joined with Fang and Vanille to be part of a crystal pillar that prevent the artificial moon crashing into the planet.

3. According to the main villain of the 2nd game, she died in combat.

Did she survived?

1. She revert back to human after being a crystal zombie by the power of friendship. This may of been acceptable in the classic 2D games but in a modern 3D game, it's too cheesy to accept.

However the sequel retcon the whole power of friendship to overcome crystal zombie status. What really happen is the goddess Etro caused divine intervention to undo their cursed state.

2. Lightning being part of the crystal pillar was lie. Lightning did live happly ever after in the original game but it was retconned in-game. She was pulled out of her time to protect the goddess from sequel's game's villain. This cause time to be rewritten, undoing the happy ending, making her friends think she became part of the pillar.

3. As for the 2nd game's villain saying she died, it was really a bluff. She did fell into crystal sleep to come back and save the world aka the 3rd game.

Some say these two ladies are the main characters of FF13. These Aussie-accent monster hunters are Fang and Vanille.
Did they die? Well Vanille became a crystal zombie but see Lightning's entry for more details.

They "died" when they combine and turn into a giant monster and prevent the artificial moon crashing into the planet and turn into a crystal pillar.

Did they survived? Their crystal bodies were safety removed from the crystal pillar at the end of the 2nd game and they were seen fully awake in the 3rd game.

In 13-2, the main character of the game has this kindergarten teacher known as Serah.
Serah is the younger sister of Lightning and engaged to a giant called Snow. She was frozen in crystal in the original game but released by the end of the game. In the sequel, her sister mysteriously disappeared and her fiance went out to find her. She later encounter a man from the far future who told her that he will help her find her sister and stop the end of time.

Did she die? She gain the ability to see into the future. Whenever time is rewritten, she will the altered future. However this will shorted her lifespan. With the villain dead and the bad future prevented, the new vision killed her. However, it turns out killing the villain led to a different bad future, which led to the 3rd game.

Did she survived? The 3rd game was at the end of time and the creator god was making a new world. After the final boss was killed, everyone was being taken there, even Serah who is revived in the new world.

That is it for the series. I hope you guys enjoyed reading all of this.
